Ightham Scout Pavilion
The brief was to provide a building which had at its core a multi-purpose hall that would become the focus for the Scouts’ activities. The pavilion is to be shared with the local football club, who use the changing facilities at weekends.
The building is cut into the rising ground to reduce mass. Vertical timber cladding runs around the whole lower level of the building, creating a secure and solid base, tying the building to its rural context. Discreet entrance doors are formed of the same cladding allowing the building to be completely protected when not in use. A simple steel portal frame creates the main double height structure to the hall. Polycarbonate cladding forms the main gables and clerestories and floods the hall with natural light. The lower ancillary wing sits under a green roof to strengthen the ties to the rural setting.
